Recently Luke lamented thathis favorite ebook reader was being sunset. Isuggested Kindle. I was showing off the features I liked about Kindle when Irealized that while I could send personal documents (PDF, MOBI) to my kindledevices (Kindle, iPad, iPhone), these personal documents were not showing up inKindle for Mac orKindle Cloud Reader. These apps only let me readkindle books I have purchased on Amazon.
This morning I got the following email from Amazon:
Dear Kindle Customer,
As a past user of personal documents on Kindle devices or reading apps, we arepleased to let you know about some improvements we've made to how personaldocuments work.
Personal documents are now in Amazon Cloud Drive: Starting today, allpersonal documents that you have archived in your Kindle Library will beavailable to access, delete, organize, and share from your Amazon Cloud Drive. You can see these documents in a new 'My Send-to-Kindle Docs' folder alongsideall of your saved content such as photos and personal videos.
There is no action required on your part. Your personal documents featureswill continue to work just as they have in the past. And as always, you canuse Manage Your Kindle to see a list of yourdocuments, re-deliver them to Kindle devices and free reading apps, deletethem, or turn off auto-saving of documents to the cloud. Documents will bedelivered just as they have in the past and you will continue to have 5 GB offree cloud storage for your personal documents. Just 'Send Once, ReadEverywhere.'
Documents stored in their native format: Also starting today, newdocuments that you save to the cloud with Send to Kindle will be stored intheir native format (e.g. MS Word, TXT) so you can access them anywhere fromAmazon Cloud Drive.
Please note: Your usage of Amazon Cloud Drive is subject to theAmazon Cloud Drive Terms of Use.
Sincerely, The Docs Team

I learned a number of things from this email.
First, I didn't even know there was anAmazon Cloud Drive appthat essentially works like Dropbox,Copy, Google Drive, etc. So I installed it. What's one more?
After installing it, I had a cloud drive folder and it synced some MP3's I hadpurchased from Amazon in the past. It also created a folder that contained allmy personal docs I had syned to my kindle devices.
Still, I didn't see a way to automatically see these docs in my Kindle for Macapp.
Fortunately, I found an easy hack to make it work.
How to sync personal kindle docs with your local kindle app
In the Kindle for Mac app, you can set your content folder in your preferences.Just set this to the Amazon Cloud Drive folder that contains all your personalKindle docs. Done!
Still, I don't think it will sync furthest location read between devices.Hopefully this is addressed at some point.

Sending personal docs to kindle
Send To Kindle For Mac
The other thing I learned is that there are easier ways to send personaldocuments to kindle. While the email message is nice, it is not ideal. Idownloaded the Send To Kindle app thatlets you simply drag & drop a file. It will even try to convert PDF files toKindle files. I'm not sure how well it works though.
Good job Kindle & Docs teams. Keep up the good work!
Kindle Editor's Review
Read your favorite eBooks on your Mac or on your PC with some of the best software available on the internet.
I've been an eBook advocate since 2002 when I began reading books with Microsoft Reader. It was one of the best main streamed options at the time, AND it worked well with PocketPC's, which, in my opinion were the best kind of PDA on the market at the time. (Truth be told, I was never fond of PalmOS or Blackberries, the other two major mobile choices at the time).
Amazon is the king of eBooks, and has been since the modern smartphone came into being after the introduction of the original iPhone back in 2007. Their Kindle hardware was revolutionary Their Kindle software available for any number of smartphones as well as your Windows PC or Mac allows you to read your eBooks where and when you want; and the software, is a total must have.
Kindle is a free application that lets you read Kindle eBooks on your Windows PC or on you Mac. Kindle offers most of the features you would find on a Kindle, Kindle DX, or other Kindle applications for computers and mobile devices. The best thing about it is that it allows you to automatically save and sync your last read page and all of your annotations across all your Kindle devices and hardware. You can also browse Amazon's huge eBook library and purchase as well as download and read thousands of books from the Kindle Store.
The software interface is customizable. You can change font sizes and adjust the number of words that appear on each line. You can also change the number of columns that appear on a single page. If you're reading a book for school or some other academic project, you'll be pleased to know that you can add and view notes and highlights in your books. You'll also be able to sync your annotations to all your Kindle apps and devices. You can even view Kindle Print Replica books, which are exact replicas of physical textbooks.
App Pro’s: Free, WhisperSync last page read and annotations across all Kindle devices
Kindle For Macbook
App Con’s: Hard to get non-Kindle Store books in the app, Won't run on OS X Yosemite Beta 7 or earlier
Kindle For Mac Dark Mode
Conclusion: Amazon's Kindle app is, in my opinion, the best eBook reading app available today. It is powered by the Kindle Store, which has the biggest library of eBooks on the internet. The software is device agnostic, meaning you can put the software on just about any computing device you have – PC, Mac, iDevice, Android, Windows Phone, etc. – and it will sync your progress across all devices. The only issue I have with the app is that its not easy to put non-Kindle eBooks in the app. It will work with ePub, but you might have to convert older eBooks to ePub (or other compatible format), and that isn't always the easiest thing to do.
